What’s wrong with calling a book of short stories “a book of short stories”?Ĭoming both literally and literarily from Latin America, these idiosyncrasies have always puzzled me. Call me picky, but this has always been a problematic word for me, because it masks the fact that this kind of book – if any good – is still a coherent conceptual unit: stories don’t grow spontaneously, like weed, so that writers can simply collect them. But the hapless short-story book is still generally referred to as a “collection” in English. The latter tendency is falling out of fashion, thank God (thanks in large part to indie presses). S hort stories: how not to despair with the unjust way they are treated in the world of British letters? From their frequent definition in terms of what they are not – a novel – to the reluctance of risk-averse publishers when it comes to releasing one of these not-novels into the world. ![]() ![]() BOOM! Which all makes it sound as if I didn’t like this novel. I fear he’s on the verge of going full Rambo in his search for Cyril. Aristide is now a lovelorn director who’s given up most of his overt femininity. Cyril is replaced with his sister, whose story–woman tries to save child and reclaim lost love while realizing she needs a man to lean on–is predictable. The Ospie presence is reduced to an embassy with an ineffective leader. Immediate danger is also toned down as Geddan ex-pats are relatively safe in a stable, powerful kingdom. The betrayals and murders are toned down. This novel is, in comparison, predictable. I never knew what would happen next, and loved it. Beloved characters could be caught, tortured, mutilated. The fall of Gedda into a fascist state was inevitable, heartbreaking. The love affair at the heart of the novel was understated, with both men unable to either trust one another, or to admit that they had feelings for one another beyond sex and politics. ![]() The plotting, the counter-plotting, the betrayals were unpredictable. Fear drove characters to do horrible things. Having said that, I must confess to enjoying Amberlough more. ![]() ![]() ![]() The duality of Equiano’s identity is due to his having been old enough to develop within his home nation’s culture but then being torn away and forced into that of another nation’s culture. ![]() His constantly evolving views on Christianity paired with varied interactions with Europeans changed his perception of the new culture he found himself thrust into and played an important role in the development of Equiano’s self identification as an ex-slave or an Englishman. The discovery and evaluation of Olaudah Equiano’s faith in Christianity, during his time as a slave and into his time as a freeman, creates a picture for those who have read into his narrative of a constant battle between cultures and the development of a unique experience of gaining his freedom and fighting for it against all odds. The narrative of Olaudah Equiano gives a captivating account of a young African male kidnapped from his homeland, forced into slavery, and how he overcame this oppression and regained his freedom. ![]() ![]() There’s no shame in this we’re all volunteers and things happen.
